Trail
of the Dents du Midi
HISTORY
OF THE DDM TRAIL
The Dents-du-Midi Trail inherits the legacy of Europe’s oldest mountain race. Born in the 1960s as a training route for the Swiss army, it became an official race in 1964 with a 44 km marathon starting from Vérossaz. A pioneer of Valais hiking tours, it built its reputation through its sporting challenges and its unique route around an iconic mountain range.
The tour was explored as early as 1962 by Fernand Jordan, then tested in 1963 by the Daviaz Ski Club. Its success led to the creation of an official hiking trail, inaugurated in 1972, thanks to visionaries who built and renovated over 40 km of paths, marked the route, and defined the stages.
Today, the trail follows the paths of the Tour des Dents-du-Midi, offering an exceptional alpine environment: lakes, waterfalls, forests, alpine pastures, and mountain wildlife. A true journey into the heart of preserved nature.
